Meaning and Use


The adverb viÅ”eĀ is used to express:


  1. More (a greater amount/degree)Ā ā€“ comparison or increase.

    • Example: Želim viÅ”eĀ vode.Ā ā†’ I want more water.

    • Example: Ona uči viÅ”eĀ nego prije.Ā ā†’ She studies more than before.


  2. No longer / not anymoreĀ (when used with ne).

    • Example: Ne radim ovdje viÅ”e.Ā ā†’ I donā€™t work here anymore.

    • Example: On me ne voli viÅ”e.Ā ā†’ He doesnā€™t love me anymore.


  3. Greater extent / intensity.

    • Example: Volim je sve viÅ”eĀ i viÅ”e.Ā ā†’ I love her more and more.



āš ļø Notice:

  • Without ne, it means more.

  • With ne, it usually means anymore / no longer.




JOÅ Ā and VIÅ EĀ look similar but they donā€™t mean the same thing. Hereā€™s the clear difference:


1. JOÅ 


šŸ‘‰ Main meanings:

  • still / yetĀ (something continues or has not happened yet)

  • more / anotherĀ (adding something extra)


Examples:

  • On joÅ” spava.Ā ā†’ He is stillĀ sleeping.

  • ImaÅ” li joÅ” pitanja?Ā ā†’ Do you have any moreĀ questions?

  • Želim joÅ” jednu kavu.Ā ā†’ Iā€™d like anotherĀ coffee.

  • JoÅ” nije doÅ”ao.Ā ā†’ He has not arrived yet.


šŸ’” JoÅ”Ā often works with the idea of continuation or addition.



2. VIÅ E


šŸ‘‰ Main meanings:

  • moreĀ (comparative, quantity, degree)

  • no more / not anymoreĀ (when used with negation: neā€¦ viÅ”e)


Examples:

  • Ona ima viÅ”e knjiga od mene.Ā ā†’ She has moreĀ books than me.

  • Trebamo viÅ”e vremena.Ā ā†’ We need moreĀ time.

  • Ne radim viÅ”e ovdje.Ā ā†’ I donā€™t work here anymore.

  • Ovdje viÅ”e nema mjesta.Ā ā†’ There is no moreĀ space here.


šŸ’” ViÅ”eĀ focuses on comparisonĀ or increase in amount, or with negation ā†’ not anymore.

  • JoÅ”Ā = still, yet, more/another (continuing or adding).

  • ViÅ”eĀ = more (in quantity/degree), or not anymore (with negation).
