Croatian Expression for Hot Weather

2 min read

If you spend summer in Croatia, sooner or later you will probably hear someone say:

Skuhao sam se!

or

Skuhala sam se!

Don’t worry — nobody has actually been cooked. 😄

This is a very common informal expression Croatians use when they are extremely hot.

What does “Skuhao sam se” mean?

The verb skuhati literally means to cook.

For example:

  • Skuhala sam ručak. – I cooked lunch.

  • Skuhao sam tjesteninu. – I cooked the pasta.

But when we say:

Skuhao sam se.Skuhala sam se.

we mean:

I’m boiling.

I’m roasting.

I’m so hot.

You can use it when you are very hot because of the weather, your clothes, a hot room, public transport, exercise, or anything else.

Why are there two forms?

Croatian past tense changes according to the gender of the speaker.

A man says:

Skuhao sam se.

A woman says:

Skuhala sam se.

In the plural:

Skuhali smo se. – a group of men or a mixed group

Skuhale smo se. – a group of women

Everyday examples

Uf, skuhao sam se u autobusu. Nema klime.

Ugh, I’m roasting on the bus. There’s no air conditioning.

Zašto sam obukla traperice? Skuhala sam se!

Why did I wear jeans? I’m boiling!

Bili smo cijeli dan na plaži i skuhali smo se.

We were at the beach all day and we were roasting.

Otvori prozor, molim te. Skuhala sam se ovdje.

Open the window, please. I’m boiling in here.

Vani je 35 stupnjeva. Skuhao sam se dok sam došao do trgovine.

It's 35 degrees outside. I was roasting by the time I got to the shop.

Why do we say “Vruće MI je”?

The normal Croatian way to say “I’m hot” is:

Vruće mi je.

Literally, the structure is closer to:

“It is hot to me.”

The word mi means “to me” and is the short form of the dative pronoun meni.

Croatian uses this structure for many physical sensations and feelings:

Vruće mi je. – I’m hot.

Hladno mi je. – I’m cold.

Dobro mi je. – I feel good.

Loše mi je. – I feel unwell.

Dosadno mi je. – I’m bored.

So instead of describing the person directly, Croatian often describes how something feels to that person.

You can also use the full form meni when you want to emphasize the person:

Meni je vruće, a njemu nije.

I’m hot, but he isn’t.

In a neutral sentence, however, we normally use the short form:

Vruće mi je.

Not:

Ja sam vruć (vruć sam would be more natural) / Ja sam vruća (vruća sam).

That sentence describes the person as hot (your body is hot), rather than saying that the person feels hot.

So for temperature and how you feel, remember:

✅ Vruće mi je.

❌ Ja sam vruć / vruća.

Compare the expressions

Vruće mi je.→ I’m hot.

Jako mi je vruće.→ I’m very hot.

Kuham se!→ I’m boiling!

Skuhao sam se! / Skuhala sam se!→ I’m absolutely roasting!

So skuhao sam se / skuhala sam se is much more expressive than the neutral vruće mi je and is very natural in informal conversation.
